A Grand Tour is part of the Timeless Victorian Collection. This collection includes three novellas, each written three different authors. The stories are:
A Lord’s Chance by Anthea Lawson
Falling in Rome by Jennifer Moore
A Secret Arrangement by Heather B. Moore
I’ve never read a compilation of novellas before. I loved that these books could individually be read in one sitting. It was nice to take a little break and be able to read an entire story! I have only read books by Jennifer Moore, so I enjoyed getting to know the other two authors’ writing styles through this book.
I’ve always been intrigued by the notion of a “Grand Tour”. As I’ve read different regency books, there has been the occasional mention of a character taking a Grand Tour—usually stating what the character learned or saw on their grand tour, but I never completely understood what that meant exactly. In each of these three novellas, the characters embark on a tour of a different location. It was fun to see what these tours looked like in depth. I envied their positions and wealth to be able to vacation for weeks or months at a time!
The tours in this book take place in Greece, Rome and Egypt. I loved that the women in each story were all educated and weren’t ashamed of their knowledge. Not only did each story include a fun adventure among ruins and sculptures, but each shared a TON of history, as well. I learned a lot! For such short stories, each was told with remarkable character and plot development. I admired that such complete stories were told so concisely, with so much detail.
Because I love butterflies and their symbol of transformation, this quote from A Lord’s Chance caught my eye:
The collection of these three novellas was delightful! The romance was sweet, and the historical aspect and exotic settings were fun to read about. I would definitely recommend this book!
