You don’t need to be a genius, you just need to be yourself. That’s the message from Austin Kleon, a young writer and artist who knows that creativity is everywhere, creativity is for everyone. A manifesto for the digital age, Steal Like an Artist is a guide whose positive message, graphic look and illustrations, exercises, and examples will put readers directly in touch with their artistic side.
I cannot recommend this book enough. My husband, Rob, and I both read it recently, and connected with it immediately. Kleon identifies 10 steps to be more effective at creating anything (art, writing, music…life!). I read through it quickly, then went back and digested it more slowly. It is written in a simple, fun style and is illustrated throughout with entertaining artwork.
His advice can apply to anyone, not just artists. I love the chapter on digital vs analog, and how the digital age is robbing us of some of our creativity. He said that people still need to feel the touch of paper or hear the scratch of a pencil. I like how he creates with his hands first, and then uses technology to perfect it.
This book has jump-started our creativity–it is a must-have for every household!
