goodreads: The Duke of Kielder has more influence than Parliament, higher social standing than the Royal Family. No gentleman dares face him on the dueling field, nor risks testing his infamous temper. But His Grace is in need of a wife. Combine his fearsome reputation with a terribly scarred countenance and finding a lady willing to accept his hand becomes all-but impossible. When the Duke manages to secure a bride through a bit of trickery and an obscene amount of money, he is certain his problems are behind him. Except his purchased bride proves to be nothing like he expected. What is a man like the Duke to do with a bride who is gentle, loving and absolutely impossible to live without?
Sarah Eden’s books are very popular at the library. I am constantly checking them in, and putting them on our hold shelf. After a few months of seeing so many books by one author cross the desk, my curiosity got the better of me, and I checked this one out. And I just happened to get the first one she had written! Not to be cliche, but once I picked this book up, I couldn’t put it down! It has a fun plot, driven by memorable characters and witty dialogue. It appears that Eden based this book loosely on the greek myth of Hades and Persephone (which I had not heard before). While this made a fun plot, this book also reminded me of Beauty and the Beast.
Persephone meets Adam for the first time on their wedding day. She agrees to marry him to save her family from financial ruin, but he is a little intimidating. Like Belle, she is kind and compassionate, and tries to help Adam overcome his impatience with people. Over time, she grows to love him but continues to wonder how he feels about her. Like the Beast, Adam has a temper that has frightened his neighbors, and he is often seen storming around in his castle. Eventually he sends Persephone away to be with her family.
I won’t spoil the ending, but it was such a fun book. From what I’ve read online, Eden’s other books are stand-alones, but are connected through other characters. I’m exited to read Courting Miss Lancaster next!
