They have always scared him in the past—the Rangers, with their dark cloaksand shadowy ways. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now 15-year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger’s apprentice. What he doesn’t yet realize is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied. . . .
I bought this book four years ago for my oldest son’s birthday. The cover looked a little menacing, so I started reading the book just to make sure it was a clean read. I got so caught up in the characters and the story that I couldn’t put it down! I have now read most of the series, and while one or two have a slower plot line, I have enjoyed every book that I’ve read. Five out of my six kids have now read it, and love the world of Araluen! There is even a fun interactive website with activities and news about John Flanagan’s latest books. Check it out: http://www.rangersapprentice.com/
My son, Joel (age 10), is the newest fan of the series and this is what he has to say about the book:
The Rangers Apprentice series is a epic adventure. Will is an apprentice to Halt and is trying to learn how to become a good ranger. Will, Horace, and Halt go on a quest to save people from dying from the monstrous, Kalkara, an ancient race that live in the Mountains of Rain and Night. On their way they meet Horace’s teacher, Sir Rodney, and Baron Arold. Together they search for the Kalkara. When they find-and-kill the kalkara, they go to Redmont and have a huge celebration where Will is the honored guest. I loved this book, and wish I could learn archery like Will. I learned that you don’t have to be big to be a hero, that anyone can be a hero.
