My Own Mr. Darcy by Karey White

From goodreads: After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough. Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.

As a huge Jane Austen fan, I was immediately drawn into this book by its cover. The meadow scene from the newest Pride and Prejudice movie literally stops my heart--the cover reminds me of that scene! I connected with the premise of this book. Who wouldn't want their own Mr. Darcy? But I liked the way the book portrayed how this desire could turn into obsession and blindness. Elizabeth almost didn't see what was right in front of her because of her dream of finding the perfect Mr. Darcy.

I liked Elizabeth. She is very real. Throughout the book she gains confidence and learns to listen to her heart. It was fun to watch her talents as an interior designer unfold. I love strong characters, and while she did get smothered by another character for a time, she definitely learns to stand up for herself. I loved the dialogue, the fun date and decorating ideas, and the relationships she builds with other people.

The book was interesting in that it delved into Mr. Darcy's characteristics--both good and bad. He is a complex character in that at first, you are led to dislike him, but then grow to love him. I thought one of the characters in the book would be like more like Darcy, and maybe Elizabeth did too. But this character never grew on me, and by the end I was totally voting for the other guy! I was happy to see the book ended how it did, with Elizabeth picking the right guy.

I thought it was fun how this book talked about two of the Pride and Prejudice movies--the new one with Keira Knightley and the six hour one with Colin Firth. Personally, I love them both, but the new one stirs more emotions with its music and faster pace. This is totally the nerd in me, but I loved how the main character of this book agreed with me on that point!

I appreciate how clean this story is. It is a fun new re-telling of a classic story with a modern twist. Anyone with a love of Pride and Prejudice should read this book!

  1. It was the meadow scene that inspired the cover, for sure. I think that's one of the greatest movie scenes ever made and I could (and have) watch it dozens of times.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the book. Thanks for the lovely review. Have a great day!
