The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness: A True Story by Joel ben Izzy

From goodreads: The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness is that rare, magical book—a book that tells a good story but also shows us how the tales we learned when we were children shed light on our adult lives. Joel ben Izzy had the unusual opportunity to relive those lessons when he lost his voice and reconnected with his old teacher, Lenny, a retired storyteller. Through his meetings with Lenny, Joel rediscovers the wisdom of ancient tales and takes us on a journey into a world of beggars and kings, monks and tigers, lost horses and buried treasures—and in the end tells us the secret of happiness.

This is one of those great books that you want to just shout from the rooftops for the world to read. I loved it so much, that after reading it, I bought a copy for each one of my siblings for their birthdays. I just wanted everyone I loved to read this amazing story! This is a book about a storyteller who loses his voice due to thyroid cancer. This book is an auto-biography, but as a storyteller, ben Izzy shares stories that are similar to his life's experiences, and shows how these stories helped shape his attitudes, and got him through a difficult time in his life.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is, "As hard as we search, we can only see [happiness] when we stop to wonder, looking back to see where we've been and what we've learned." This book made me stop and think about finding the happiness in my life that I take for granted! This book really helped me to change my perspective on trials--that it is through our trials that we grow and learn. I love how thought-provoking this book is. You can read it over and over again, and get something new out of it every time.

Get your hands on it, read it...you'll love it!
